Hi experts,

:: Eliza Bennett Lonnon - born 1804, Portsea, St John, Hampshire

This ancestor's birth is reported in Findmypast but not on Familysearch.
My first question therefore is why this should be so. I thought these services accessed the same original records?

I want to identify the names of Eliza's parents as well as the home location of the family in 1804.
Therefore my second question is, Does purchasing the transcription within FindMyPast provide any or all of that information? I'd like to know that before paying for access to the transcription.

My third question of course is, Is there a more direct way of accessing the Hampshire Baptisms?

This would solve a rather knotty problem I am faced with.

There seem to be two families that live in very close proximity in 1804. In one case the parents are John and Mary Bennick and in the other case the parents are John and Sarah Bennick. Only I have a hunch that the father is the same man in both families. I can find evidence of one John Bennick in this area but not evidence of two. Unfortunately the birth years of the children from the two families overlap so it does not appear to be a simple case of a man remarrying after the death of his first wife. Finding the names of the parents to my ancestor (Eliza Bennett Lonnon) would help.

Appreciate your help.

-David C

Familysearch records are transcribed by the LDS and are sometimes pulled over by FindMyPast & Ancestry as part of their database, these records generally show the film number from where the record has been extracted.  The entry you can see on FindMyPast has been provided by Hampshire Genealogical Society

I see...

so FindMyPast's data includes but is not restricted to the same source as provided by LDS (Familysearch).

Thanks

The LDS entries for CMB are just indexes with the basic details as is the HGS marriage index.

The HGS christening and burial records should be full transcriptions of the entries and include further details (if any).  If you have Hampshire ancestors the HGS transcriptions are well worth buying.

I have a follow-up question regarding the birth transcription for Eliza Bennett Lonnon (1804, Portsea).

In other places her middle name is given as Benneck and I am pretty confident that Benneck is the proper spelling (for reasons to long to explain). Therefore BENNETT would be a transcription error.

Is it possible to view the original handwriting and confirm that it is (or at least could be) Benneck ?

Cheers

On the subject of the HGS CDs, I have just browsed their website and will look into this. Thanks for the recommendation. Am tempted to join their society even though I am on the opposite side of the world.

but not on Familysearch.

Not so. She's transcribed as Eliza Bennett Lennon on Family Search
Digital images of the microfilms of Portsea parish registers are viewable at their Family History Centres.
