1851 census shows William Martin 45 cheesemonger b Westminster at 16 Victoria Rd Westminster with sons Alfred Wm 7 and Arthur Thos 5 (plus 3 servants).

No marital status is shown for William; no wife is present.

Before I forget the mothers maiden name for both these two boys was JUDD

  Wow - how amazing are you two - avm228 and keyboard86 - thank you so much for giving me so much information - have only just come back online this morning since posting my request on Rootschat last night - so have yet to take in all the results you both have given me - so lots for me to process today now.

Thank you again for following up Charlotte Elizabeth's family for me - was full of good intentions to do housework but that has gone for a burton now  - can't wait to add all of this to my family tree.

Just need some information and her husband's family - George Aplin - I can't seem to go further back in time  - don't know if he has any siblings of course as I can't confirm who his parents are but at least I can move on now up Charlotte Elizabeth's line

Hi everyone

I have been processing the information I have received so far - many thanks - but now have a few queries about them in consequence.

If Alfred William (the cheesemonger) and Arthur Thomas are the sons of William Martin and Elizabeth Judd, are we assuming that Sarah is the sister of William Martin and that is how Alfred William and she are connected - aunt and nephew? - but slightly worried as still no link to the witnesses John and Charlotte Martin at her wedding to Bryan Neale in 1829.  Could they be other children of William and Elizabeth?  I had thought they might be her parents but can't find out anything about them at all on the usual ancestry sites.

I apologise for asking more questions but thank you for reading this further query and await very hopefully as Rootschat have always been so helpful to me.  Thanks again

Yes the hypothesis I was following was that Alfred, Sarah's executor, was her nephew, William being her brother and Elizabeth nee Judd her sister in law.

Still only a hypothesis.  We don't yet have a confirmed baptism for William, though we know he said (upon his remarriage in 1852) that his father was another William.  Mother & siblings as yet unknown.

This looks like the marriage of James Martin, who appears at the same address as William in 1841:

5 June 1848, St George Bloomsbury

James Martin full age bach cheesemonger of Gilbert's Passage, Lincoln's Inn Fields.  Father: William Martin, Army clothier

Jane Gaze full age spinster of 32 Hyde St.  Father: John Gaze, collar maker.

Witnesses: Wm? Gaze, Olive Gaze.

In 1851 we find James Martin, cheesemonger and oilman, 36 b St Margaret Westminster, still at 9 Gilbert St (same as 1841) with wife Jane and infant daughter Jane.  Also in the household is a 14 yr old niece Elizabeth Martin b St Margaret, plus servants.
