but now slightly more confused as according to the 1881 Census, Alfred William was 37 then, likely date of birth 11 August 1843, baptism on 31 December 1843, and his admission as a Freemason in 1872 when he was apparently aged 28, seems to infer that he wouldn't be alive in 1841  - likewise his brother Arthur Thomas was supposedly 5 in the 1851 census so wondering how he could be 2 in 1841 census.

I know that dates with early census results can vary wildly for people but these 2 statements don't seem to be feasible - what do you thinK?

I do appreciate you trying to help me in my quest and also anyone else who can help fathom these queries out - it all makes my research so interesting and think I might have to visit the LMA and LWA when I visit London later in May to try to sort this situation out.

The more background information I can seek to confirm when visiting these Archives is always useful and helpful as it gives me dates and areas to investigate.  cheers

Well I started composing the above before your next 2 posts, avm228, so it looks as if the 1851 Census mentioned above could prove to be wrong altogether and therefore Susannah and Elizabeth weren't William's wives but maybe relate to a different William Martin - I will read your posts more closely now and try to see if this tangled web gets clearer.

I think things are getting confused!  I wasn't suggesting that Alfred William and Arthur Thomas were the same children as the William and Thomas seen in 1841.  Alfred and Arthur seem to be their younger brothers.

I am pretty confident that Elizabeth Judd and Susannah Bennett were both (successive) wives of this same William Martin.

In summary, then, we have the following children for William Martin and Elizabeth nee Judd, who married in 1833:

1837: William Robert (died aged 5, buried 10 Jun 1842 St Clement Danes)
1839: Thomas George (died aged 2y 9mo, buried 14 Jun 1842 St Clement Danes)
1842: Josiah (died aged 3mo, buried 7 Sep 1842 St Clement Danes)
1843: Alfred William
1845: Arthur Thomas
1848: Albert Josiah (died aged 1, Jun qtr 1850 St Geo Han Sq)

Elizabeth Martin died aged 43, Sep qtr 1848 St Geo Han Sq.

So it seems that, very sadly, the couple lost three young sons within a few months of each other in 1842, and reused their first names as middle names for the three later sons born 1843-8.
