tracing an illegitimate child born 1860?
« on: Wednesday 26 April 17 12:44 BST (UK) »
Trying to trace the Wotton family tree from Glasgow. I know there was a David Whitelaw Wotton which is correctly identified in family tree.  But his whereabouts is difficult to ascertain oafter birth. I've managed to go back to the birth of a David Whitelaw Wootten, born illegimate to Jane or Janet Whitelaw and registered in Straiton Ayrshire. Witnessed by WIlliam WHitelaw, down as uncle.

Census results for 1841 show Jane Whitelaw...

David Whitelaw Wotton was married Sept 1880 in Kilmadock, Perth, with his father mentioned as David Wotton.  No records from then on in census results, even when I use wildcard searches, but someone suggested this.  Maybole is only a few km from Straiton...

.David Morten Whitlow
in the 1861 Scotland Census
Name: David Morten Whitlow
Age: 1
Estimated birth year: abt 1860
Relationship: Boarder
Gender: Male
Where born: Maybole, Ayrshire
Registration Number: 605
Registration district: Maybole
Civil Parish: Maybole
County: Ayrshire
Address: Kirklands
ED: 7
Household schedule number: 9
LINE: 22

Household Members:
Name Age
John White 30
Jean White 36
Barbara White 9
Margaret White 7
John White 7
Jean White 5
James W White 3
David Morten Whitlow 1.

Is it possible that Jean White, or Jane Whitelaw (wrongly transcribed)  was already married, had an illegitimate child to David Wooton,  and he was taken on by Jean and John White.. and the 1861 census transcribed him as David Morten?

Am I barking up the wrong tree?

According to the 1881 census (free LDS transcript at Scotlandspeople) David W Wotton was age 33 ( so born 1848) and Place of birth is Edinburgh. Wife Isabella was 23 born Glasgow and they had a 5 month old daughter called Isabella born Glasgow. David Whitelaw Wotton married Isabella Cockburn in 1880 at Kilmadock.

The transcript for the 1881 census says David was born about 1850 in Dalkeith Edinburgh, the 1891 census gives him born about 1860 in Straiton Ayrshire

Perhaps David's marriage certificate would be helpful?

Thanks for the above, i know there a discrepencies on the birthplace.  Would say it is definitely registered in Straiton as there is a record of birth there to Jane Whitelaw, and I have the birth certificate. (no father mentioned, name registred as David Wootton Whitelaw))  The marriage certificate of David Whitelaw Wotton unfortunately does not give the birthplace, just his parents names as Jane Whitelaw and David Wotton.  His marriage took place in Kilmadock, Perthshire that is for sure. Its his whereabouts in between then I'm wondering about...

Just seems there are only 2 records of that name or name variation in between 1861 and 1871 and as he comes up with Iisabella in the same region I wonder if this is him?

sorry have just reread one of my previous postings.. what i meant to say was that there is no record of him living with a Jane Whitelaw or any other Jane between 1861 and his marriage in 1880, would that mean he was taken on by another family.. she may have died or given him away as a "boarder"?  I also have no idea where Jane WHitelaw came from and cant find anything in births or deaths which fits the area?  Or with searches under similar names..

William Whitelaw David's uncle on birth certificate is living in Straiton in 1861. A tree on Ancestry states that his parents are dead by 1860. Mary in 1859 and Andrew in 1860.

According to the tree I found Jane was born Jane Gordon Whitelaw in 1829 mother's maiden name is Gordon. She apparently marries Thomas Reavel and is living in Scotland 1871 but ends up in England. In 1861 she is a lady's maid in Edinburgh.
