jedburgh prisoner 1861
« on: Thursday 27 April 17 15:47 BST (UK) »
Hi Can anyone tell me if there is a way of finding out the crime of a prisoner in Jedburgh prison 1861, Jessie Whitelaw, age 28?  I know you can access the Graham Maxwell Ancestry records which gives a link to a book of records you can buy... any other way?

Hi ,

Can't see anything on the National Records of Scotland website.
Maxwell Ancestry charge £5 for a transcription of the individuals record.

I believe the Jedburgh Prison Register 1843-1869 HH21/16/1-2 is held in Edinburgh -

You might be able to find a newspaper report  :-\

if you go back on the maxwell site and look at the 1861 census  - you will see that Jessie was in jail with husband Thomas this could suggest they were in the Debtors part of the jail - also gives her maiden name as mills and she was born  in Edinburgh

NB: my ancestor was the Warder George Turnbull

Someone has posted the prison transcripts (and original page images) on their Ancestry tree:
