thanks jm very enlightening sorry I would have been writting it at the time as it takes me ages as I was looking at the info on ancestry for Alice 
so what about the Robert sobey on the passenger list mentioned earlier
Would the names have been in order of adults first children last? As Robert was last on the list

There is a Robert SOBEY arriving in Australia in 1952 accompanied by other SOBEY's on the Strathaird.  There are no ages given.  They are headed for Port Lincoln in South Australia

There is no record of any Robert Sobey born between 1890 and 1910 in Scotland.

I think 'your' Robert Henry Sobey died in Aberdeen in 1967.

Sorry Gwen - I should have said it is a death on NSW BDM
https://familyhistory.bdm.nsw.gov.au/ in 1966 which I presume is for his sister.   The parents' names seem to match.
The death notice which followed names her children and grandchildren but not her brother.

Lovely that Robert seems to be found now in Scotland
