To ROSIE!!!
Good "catch"...when you say:
Where does the Thorpe, Surrey information come from - are you sure it is not Thorpe, Norfolk
I presume this is the marriage so we have some idea where in Norfolk
Henry Spencer
Ann Leigh
4 Oct 1737
Alby, Norwich, Norfolk
YES, This IS him---and the Thorpe, SURREY, i Now believe is WRONG for where they married & lived & even where Henry may have been born. I think due the marriage record, it was Always Thorpe, NORFOLK!
Where the Thorpe, SURREY comes-into the picture, is apparently when Henry & Ann (nee Leigh) SPENCER, later-on INHERIT her Uncle, Sir John Leigh's properties/ land IN, Thorpe, SURREY!
From:
http://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/surrey/vol3/pp437-440The manor descended from father to son until 1737, when Sir John Leigh died, and his children having predeceased him, Mary and Anne, his cousins, became his heiresses. The estates were held by them jointly.
So I think There is where the confusion came-in! So I am now CERTAIN (thanks to you!) that Henry was of NORFOLK (whether Thorpe or other small towns there, I don't yet know) & NOT "of" Thorpe, SURREY (but just possessed of those lands there, w/ his wife, in later years).
Thanks very much, again, for your assistance!!
Sincerely,
Vienna (Spencer)
