Assistance required in determining nationality of Mary McGuinness
« on: Monday 01 May 17 17:59 BST (UK) »
Good evening all.

My g/g/ggrandmother is Mary Kane m.s McGuiness  Born 1862 and died 1940 in Glasgow.  She was married to John Kane in 1880 in Glasgow.

The 1891 census gives the following details for Mary Kane:

John   Kane   Head   Married   Male   29   1862   General Dealer   Ireland
Mary Ann   Kane   Wife   Married   Female   28   1863   -   United States

This is where my confusion comes in - when I first joined My Heritage a number of years ago I made contact with a distant cousin who had Mary Ann Kane on her tree with her place of birth being Canada - she told me this information had been given to her grandmother who had actually met her. However the confusion comes in with this record as to whether is was the USA or Canada - or would it have been regarded as one of the same. Is anyone able to shed some light on this for me?

There was also rumours that the husband John Kane had been in and out of jail and was "well known to the police"  anywhere I could obtain more information on my g/g/g grandfather and his dodgy reputation - this is afterall what makes your research ever so exciting.

Many thanks

Leigh-Ann

Just noticed, in your title you say Mary McQuillan, but in the first post you say McGuinness.
Which is it, please?

There is an old connected post here www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=626757.0 Doesn't seem to have reached any conclusions there...

From others research, there is a family tree which includes the original image for Mary Ann McGuiness' death cert in 1940 Glasgow. Parents showing as James McGuiness, farmer, and Mary Bradley. Same parents show on her marriage late 1880. Mother deceased and father James still alive when she married.

This is a good source to check for possible criminal proceedings. http://catalogue.nrscotland.gov.uk/nrsonlinecatalogue/search.aspx

There is this possible entry for John Kane:

1893: Precognition against John Kane, George Rhodes for the crime of theft by housebreaking at Partick and Parkhead, Glasgow.

Accused: John Kane, Age: 28, hammerman, Address: 46 Duke Street, Glasgow
George Rhodes, Age: 23, hammerman, Address: 55 High Street, Glasgow, Origin: Native of Dublin, Ireland

Verdict: john Kane - Guilty, Sentence: Penal servitude - 3 years Previous convictions: assault and robbery

There are a few other possible entries which might connect to him but not enough detail to be be more certain for now.

Bev's 1881 entry for John and Mary Ann showed him as a hammerman, so certainly a possible connected entry for him.

Don't think the John Kane above mentioned in the court case is connected now. He shows in a newspaper clip in the Glasgow Herald, with an alias of James Thomson. His address is given (in 1896) as Cathcart Street, Govan.

Could this John Kane be a red herring and the reason why some researchers may think that John, husband of Mary Ann McGinness, may have been known to the police at that time. There are quite a few mentions in the Glasgow Herald in the 1890s for a John Kane with previous convictions.
