Farthinghoe burial lookup
« on: Monday 01 May 17 18:52 BST (UK) »
Hi

Would anyone be able to look for the burial of Sir John Egerton? He died in 1674.  The date he made his will was 29th September that year.

Many thanks

Jay

Hello Jay,

Looking at the online registers, I can't see any burials between October 1673 and Dec 1674.

Hi PrawnCocktail

I really appreciate that, thanks so very much  ;)

In his will, John, stated that if he died in Farthinghoe he was to be buried there next to his brother Thomas; if he died at Madeley (in Staffordshire) then he was to be buried next to his brother Rowland.

I have just looked at a transcription of the Madeley parish registers, however it is stated in the said transcription that no register was kept from 1668 till 1678.

Would it be possible for you check to see if his wife Anne was buried at Farthinghoe? Her will is dated 2 April 1681 and she is described as Dame Anne Egerton, of Farthinghoe on her will at the National Archives.

There is no burial entry for Anne in Madeley.

May thanks - Jay

No sign of it!

The 1673 - 1674 gap was between registers. This burial is just not there.

Other info from Collins Peerage of England

Sir John Egerton, second Baronet, eldest surviving son of Sir Rowland
died at Wrinehill, and was interred at Madeley 1674.

Hi

Thanks for this, Sandy.

What I noticed looking at Cracroft's Peerage is that they have got their Madeleys confused.  John Egerton lived at Wrinehill in Madeley, Staffordshire not Shropshire.

George Ormerod states that he was buried at Madeley in 1674 but I cannot find any evidence to confirm this as the parish registers aren't complete.  His wife, Anne, died a few years later in 1681 but she doesn't appear to have been buried at Madeley.
