Trish 1120 : This is all I have to go on from a local paper: Seems like he was here by 1840 and he would have been around 18 years old.
Kerang - Past & Present
A few of the old pioneers of the early days still remain in the district. Among these is Mr John
Clayton, who resides on the Lower Loddon, a couple of miles below the town. Mr Clayton who
is now 83 years of age and still enjoying good health, ran away from his ship in Port Jackson in
1840 and assisted in bringing over sheep from the Sydney side to Reedy Lake for Mr Curlewis.
In 1843 he was with Major Mitchell's party which was carrying out surveys in the northern part
of Victoria. After the discovery of gold in '51 he tried his luck at the diggings and was thereby
enabled to take a trip to the old country in '55. After his return he was for 12 years boundary
riding for Mr C. B. Fisher on the Gannawarra run and has resided in the district with his family
ever since.

written on page: Dear Bob. In a history of Kerang written by my grandfather when he owned
the local paper (1904). I came across the reference to your grandfather & thought you would be
interested. signed I. Adams.

Christmas edition. Prepared by George Adams, proprietor.]

certificate registration numbers:

death entry 12705 - 1907 85 years.

Thanks Chris

Hello
Sorry not to check in for a few days but I've been away.
So let's start with that marriage in 1810 at St Marylebone 11.6.1810
John Clayton and Elizabeth Webber bach and spinster both of this parish
He signs and she makes her mark.
witnesses John Defoe? and mark of ? Pickering.

And that's were I see the problem because they do seem to disappear.

No sign of them having children

???

possible burial John Clayton 1.5.1831 at Uxbridge age 44 but that clashes with the 1851 census which gives the place of birth for him.But relooking at the 1851 census they are back in Lincolnshire which is unlikely.

Hi Ciderdrinker. That is a little worrying. I really don't have much to go on except whats on my Johns death cert in Australia in 1907.
On his death cert parents are listed as John Clayton and Isabel Clayton formally Webber.
On his marriage cert To Emma Hurstfield parents are listed as John Clayton and Elizabeth Webber.

Thanks Chris

Grrrr why do I have to have the complicated rellies. Um not sure where to go to from here. I have  some research that was done here in Australia, I will re-read it and see if there is anything helpful in it.

I was wondering why, according to the Kerang Past and Present piece, John "Ran away from his ship in Port Jackson"? And if that was 1840 he must have left UK before any census.

Yes that is interesting glenclare.

Ok, back to 1841 Census in Blyton, Lincolnshire

JOHN Clayton Christened 18 July 1831, Blyton, Lincolnshire
Parents JOHN/MARY Clayton
(F/S.Org)

So this John the Grandson of John/Elizabeth??
Or Elizabeth a second Wife for John?
If Grandson it looks to me that they have a Son JOHN born much earlier!

John (1831) is easy to find in Census, marrried by 1861 Census ( to Sarah RHODES 1854 in Yorkshire).
Unfortunately Marriage is not on-line that I can find.
