How can I trace a will about 1858-60 ish .... Gloustershire area
« on: Monday 08 May 17 14:13 BST (UK) »

Evening all,

I am trying to trace a will which would have been written/lodged/executed in the Gloustershire (sp)area.

I am doing this backwards .... I know the recipient, and think I know/suspect the origin but looking for proof, difficult I know, so any help will be appreciated.

Thank you, David

1858 is the magic date when everything was centralised.

So Google probatesearch and use the search options on the .gov site
Middlesex: KING,  MUMFORD, COOK, ROUSE, GOODALL, BROWN
Oxford: MATTHEWS, MOSS
Kent: SPOONER, THOMAS, KILLICK, COLLINS
Cambs: PRIGG, LEACH
Hants: FOSTER
Montgomery: BREES
Surrey: REEVE

Actually if you don't know the name of the testator that makes it nigh on impossible for you.

Hi Stevie Steve,

Thanks for the reply and will try. I think I know the origins but ..... like all of this it is a search and a lot of luck.

Bit like trying to find information about Bluecoat schools, same benefactor.

Made a little more difficult as I am in Aust. and when it comes to England I am more than a little geographically challenged.

Thanks, David

The will index will only name executors of the deceased and not how the estate has been divided.

There are three tabs on this Wills & Probate webpage click on the "1858-1996" Tab then enter a surname & year.  You don't need to register until you find something you want to purchase.
