Winner Hill Road
« on: Tuesday 09 May 17 12:02 BST (UK) »
Hello from a new member. I have recently moved to Paignton and I take my dog in Winner Hill Road woods. Can anyone tell me the history of the woods as I feel sure they formed part of the garden to a very grand house. Am I allowed 2 questions? Do any local history group have regular meetings?

A very warm welcome to Rootschat

TORBAY EXPRESS & SOUTH DEVON ECHO

15 May 1939
"Alleged Paignton 'Black Spot' - Paignton Urban Council received a report from the Highways' Committee today to the effectthat it had decided to take no action regarding a letter from the West Ward Ratepayers' Association asking the Council to make up parts of Winner Hill-road and improve the condition of part of a private road between Clifton Road and the widened part of Winner- Hill-road.
Mr G. XXXXX said it was generally recognised that Winner Hill-road was a footpath but the fact that traffic signs said "No left turn" at the bottom made it undoubtedly a roadway. It was a real "black spot" and he hoped that the Council would review the position".

18 July 1939
"Clifton Road and Winner Hill Road, Paignton, are to be made up as soon as the builder's huts have been removed, arrangements for which are already in hand".
