In the last census Mary is boarding with Elizabeth, and has the middle name Harris. The connection to the 1901 is Jane (adoptive mother) is sister to Elizabeth and also sister in law to Sarah nee Edgar. Both sisters to Sarah's husband Thomas Shaw.

Your doing fine with replies as Janan states. :)

Hi Janan

Please forgive me, my head is bursting. I also have found the same reference details you listed, but I can't remember how I got there.
On the 1881 census Mary is listed as having only the 1 christian name, so I assumed that not having got her birth certificate, then the census would be correct, maybe I've it all wrong. I never realized how complicated and time consuming searching is, but I am truly enjoying it. I will keep your info to hand.

Many thanks

Maureen

Yes it is an enjoyably time consuming hobby ;D

Names on censuses are only whatever was given at the time so middle names are often missing.
When your brain is functioning again it would probably be wise to go back  and look at all information you have acquired so far starting with what you definitely know and working backwards.

Come back if/when you want further assistance.

Hi All

Many thanks for all you assistance. Sarah Jane Robinson is my grandmother and Sarah & Mary Edgar her half sisters. There are none of Sarah Janes children alive including her son Thomas my father.
I have left it late in life to start my search, but what I have discovered in the last week regarding my gran and her sisters has really blown my mind.
Thank you all

Regards

Maureen

ps I will ask for your help and guidance in the future if that is OK

Rootchatters will always try help where can :) it is one of the best FH forms.

Post whenever you feel ready, or find yourself stuck. Good luck with the 1874 BC  for Sarah Jane.
