Leckhampstead in Berkshire or Bucks in 1600s?
« on: Tuesday 09 May 17 22:53 BST (UK) »
Hi there
Have an ancestor, Joane SPICER, burial 1623 "in Berkshire". Her husband was a rector in Leckhampstead  till 1626. Don't know where he went after he resigned from there

Apparently the town is sometimes down as in Berks or Bucks - can anyone give same advice please?
Thanks
Meegan

Google seems confused also

https://www.google.com/#q=leckhampstead

Notice the Church on the first site. This may be the answer?

Hi Meegan,

Whilst there is/or was a Leckhampstead in Bucks, the one in Berks still exists and I think you will find that it was a Chapelry under Chieveley until the mid 1800s.

For any register entries around 1600s, you may find them in Chieveley PRs.
The Berks RO or FHS may be able to assist as I don't think they have been released onto CDs yet.

As has been said, here and in the other thread, there are two places called Leckhampstead, one in each county.

John Spicer was the Rector of Leckhampstead, Bucks (in the diocese of Lincoln). See his entry in the Clergy Database here ...

Are you sure that your Joan Spicer buried 'in Berkshire' is the same family?

Thanks bookbox - no, not sure they are a match. Need to do a bit more searching by the look of it

Cheers
