The Millbank Prison register (December 1851) gives the father’s address as 2 St Thomas Hill, Broadway, Westminster.

The Parkhurst Prison register (March 1852) gives it as 2 Tomlins Hill, Westminster.

The 1851 census address found above is 2 St Ermin’s Hill, Westminster. St Ermins Hill is off Great Chapel Street, which is off Broadway.

There is no Tomlins Hill or St Thomas Hill in the 1851 census street index for Westminster. I reckon these are all the same address, misrecorded in the prison registers.

Good Morning Everyone,

Thank you for all your efforts, which have moved the profile forward a little and confirmed the 1841 details.   Sadly, beyond 1851 remains unresolved so far.

I note the references to Parkhurst Prison.  There were three brushes with the law, the latter of which resulted in 10 years transportation commuted when he was granted early release on licence from 12/11/1855.

Hello Keyboard86 and thank you,

The Benjamin/Sarah BLIGHTON relationship goes back quite some distance, from your suggestion in 1901, and is very convincing.   But then we have the intervention of Benjamin BLYGHTON in 1901, with almost the same profile but no wife Sarah ???

The problem lies in the fact that the 1841/1851 original sources are definite that the family spelling is  BRIGHTON and not BLIGHTON/BLYGHTON, which only adds to my overall confusion.   A darkened room beckons ::)

Evening Keyboard86,

Thank you for all your efforts.

I am certain his parents are William and Jane BRIGHTON living in 1851 at No.2 St. Ermin's Hill and Benjamin living next door at No.1 employed as a servant, but surname "BRITON".   It seems I have some more re-investigation ahead.....the BLIGHTON option remains 2:1on favourite!!

Hi again, did Jane Brighton ( mother of Benjamin die), and also I have seen the odd one or two people showing on two census returns, but not a whole household!?

Martha Briton 48 b Westminster
James 16 b Westminster
Thomas 8 b Westminster

Census Ref RG09/53/39/12 ( BATTON on Anc*****)

1861 census as BRITES ( BRITON on Anc****)

Same household but now at 8, Snows Rents, Westminster
Census Ref RG09/53/120/26 with Robert & Mary Brown & Susan Street.

Martha 57
