French research help after 1919.
« on: Sunday 14 May 17 09:57 BST (UK) »
I am stumped on an Uncle of my Grandfather,Harold George, born Portsmouth in 1892 who fought in France in WW1 and met and later married a French lady named Aline Penin, daughter of Henri Penin,in June 1919 at Allouagne,Pas De Calais,France.I know nothing more on this couple, other than a story passed on by a relative that he was living after the war when he visited English relations, and told them he had been put in a prison camp during the war.The couple i think ran a cafe or restaurant pre war,but i don't know if they stayed in Allouagne, which seems to be a village.I'd most like to know if they had any children, and possibly if they exist, any records relating to his imprisonment.I don't speak French and can't seem to find a reference to looking up French registration or even French researchers i could ask.Any advice or help most welcome!

Can you just clarify. You said they met during WW1 but also say they ran a cafe before the war & he was put in a POW camp.
Do you mean they ran a cafe before WW2 & put in a POW camp during WW2 ?

If Allouagne was the birthplace of Aline Penin, it's worth looking for her birth to see if there is a marginal note referencing her death (via http://www.archivespasdecalais.fr/Archives-en-ligne/Etat-civil ).

Sure enough, she is there, 22 July 1894.  Daughter of Henri Penin, aged 30, and his wife, Honorine Pardel/Fardel(?), aged 25. The marginal notes say: married 25 June 1919, Allouagne, to Harold George, and beneath - died in Allouagne 19 July 1951

There was also a brother Henry Phillippe, 30 Jan 1898, no marginal notes (possibly indicating he moved away).

The site does have some census records, up to 1911 online (not name indexable you'd have to look through the images.) Censuses of 1921, 1926, and 1931 can be consulted but only directly at the Pas de Calais archives.

Birth records for children born to a 1919 marriage will not be accessible to you as a more distant relative, there are privacy laws which prevent access.   However, indexes up to 1932 are available for Allouagne, and there is a possible child in 1920 with surname George.

I am new on here and cant see how to reply individually, very annoying,so don't know who will see this!
Jim1,thanks for replying and yes i got all muddled re the wars, its WW1 they met and WW2 he was put in a camp.Yes,it was before and start of the war they had a cafe. The relation who told me said Nazis would come in and they had some coded way of insulting them, should have written the details down as i have forgotten!!
Jorose and Garstonite, many thanks for the information which you have given me,gives a lot to go on i would never have found!I really do appreciate it.The relative i spoke to did think the couple had some children but didn't know how many or what happened to them. The census from the 20s look to be useful. If Aline died in Allouagne then looks like that where they settled.
The marriage record for Aline Penin says her father was a chauffeur.
Many thanks again and hope i can work out how to reply individually!!
