The 1891 Welsh Census has a Charles Paris (a S.ship Stoker) aged 35 years from Mauritius boarding with many other sailors (some from France right next to him in the list) in Cardiff at 165 Bute Street.
Tannahill:  Ayrshire, Renfrewshire

On the 14th August 1918, the ship Empress of Britain arrived in New York from Liverpool.

One of the passengers was Charles Wilfred Paris. The print out isn't very clear so I will have another look at it next time I am in the library. It is available on Ancestry worldwide which I son't have.

Heather

I can't find the one you're referring to, but New York passenger lists from that time frame are available for free at www.familysearch.org or http://www.libertyellisfoundation.org/passenger (registration is free).

I did find the passenger list here - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JJZ8-CPP  The 2nd page says he was born Port Louis, Mauritius.

Corrine,

Are you aware that the birth of your great-grandfather, Charles Wilfred Paris, was registered at the British consular office in Valparaiso? This suggests to me that he was born on a British ship but I do not know how this affects his nationality - if his parents were both French.

Additionally, I do not know whether you are already familiar with the (free) Welsh Newspapers Online website [which is hosted by the National Library of Wales].

I mention this because, on this site, (as well as a number of reports about the manslaughter on the barque Longfellow in 1887) there is a particular newspaper item from the South Wales Daily News of 15 July 1896 that may be of interest to you.

If you search on this site using [exactly as shown] "charles-wilfrid-paris" you will find an intriguing account (under the heading: "An Extraordinary Incident") of his encounter with an armed man - who may have been a wanted murderer!

Willyam

Willyam,

thank you for you post. I wasn't aware (till now of course !) that my great-grand father was registred at the British consulate. I knew he was born in Valparaiso and I looked for him at the French consulate ! and, of course, they had nothing about him.
Can I ask you how and where I can find a copy of this registration ? Maybe It will help me to know if the Charles Wilfrid Paris of Cardiff was really his disappeared father and my great-great grand father (not easy when both father and son have the same name !!!!).
One more time, thank you for these informations.
Corinne

Hello Heather,
no I don't have this. May be "my" paris  ??? Parish could be a phonetic transcription of Paris ?
Thank you Heather for your help.

You need to remember that the names that are written down are what the enumerator heard.
I will look for the original census to check the spelling.
