Margaret Cootes Smith 1846
« on: Tuesday 16 May 17 15:48 BST (UK) »
Trying to trace my Great Great Grandmother listed on 1911 census as Maggie C Page wife of Edward J Page in Southport, Lancashire, England - the census states she was born in Cavan, Ireland in around 1846.

They have been married 44 years on the 1911 census.

I can trace the family right back to the 1871 census in Southport where she is age 24 but have no idea when she came to England from Ireland.

They had 7 children during their marriage:

Henry Stuart
Edward Joshua
Eleanor Adelaide
Frederick Thornton
Rebecca Sophia
Charles Herbert
Arthur Stanley- my Great Grandfather

There is a Belfast Newsletter entry in the announcements section with a marriage of a Margaret Cootes Smith to an Edward Page in Liverpool on 15 December 1866, she is noted as the youngest and only surviving daughter of Mr Henry Smith. Cavan.

This matches a marriage in the Marriage Index in Liverpool Oct-Dec 1866 of an Edward J Page to a Margaret Smith.

I would love to find a birth record for her, and when she came to England and hopefully find out who her mother may have been but I can't seem to find anything! any help would be much appreciated :)

It may assist your future research to note that the couple married at the Wesley Chapel, Tranmere (according to the Belfast Newsletter announcement).

Knowing the relevant religious denomination is often relevant to identifying where to look for records.

Thanks, yes I forgot to add on the death record I had that too.

It looks like Wesley Chapel was a methodist chapel that opened in 1844- the year they married.

Another important snippet of information is that Margaret's father Henry Smith was deceased ("the late...") by the time she married in 1866.

If you order the marriage certificate you'll be able to see Margaret's address at marriage and the names of the marriage witnesses - with luck they will include a relative of hers (though this is far from guaranteed).
