It is amazing how many new databases spring up when I'm not looking. :)

Rosezi-you may well be correct on the merchant seaman theory.

Annie- ;D ;D  I only wish I could be as "sleuthy" as our Sandra.

Only his brother Joseph Dunbar born 1875 in Birkenhead, he is missing from the 1881 census so I assume he must have died in infancy, only no death record found up until now. I have found another Joseph Dunbar who was a merchant navy seaman complete with photo but it's a different Joseph Dunbar.

Another entry for Daniel Dunbar - New York, Discharges of Convicts, 1882-1915  Sentence Date 18 Oct 1895 Kings County Penitentiary,  Brooklyn, New York. Discharge Date 18 Oct 1897 Grand Larceny - 2 years 6 months - commutation earned 6 months.

Sandra

There's an article about this crime if you search for all the words "Daniel Dunbar" "Sing Sing" on www.fultonhistory.com.  It looks like he stole a watch and chain off a sleeping man.

Not sure if it's the same Daniel, but a Daniel Dunbar was arrested for cutting a man in Brooklyn in 1893 - http://nyshistoricnewspapers.org/lccn/sn83030193/1893-01-23/ed-3/seq-3.pdf

It's a very helpful website for free newspapers in New York and beyond.  It's best to look at it on a real computer.  This site gives hints on how to use - http://whereyoucamefrom.blogspot.com/2014/01/tutorial-searching-fulton-history.html
