Tullyvallan sort of makes sense. I know John’s mother was born in Newton Hamilton in 1852, daughter of William McGaw and Sarah McAllister. And I had read a thread on the Armagh pages about Newton Hamilton coming under the Castleblayney poor law union. So the Monaghan bit is a red herring and he is in all likelihood born in the area of Newton Hamilton, Armagh? From what I read the McGaw’s seem to have been in the Fews since the Plantation. I was hoping to narrow down the suspects as to who John’s father was. Later on John gives his father’s name as John Chambers and the rumour is that Mary McGaw was a domestic in a “big house” and John chambers was the head of the house (possibly a farmer).

That is Why it is important to know what area is covered by Castleblaney  District!

Not necessarily born in Castleblaney just REGISTERED in that District

In 1916, when 70 years old, a James son of a John applied for Old Age Pension... may or may not connect!!

Horrid handwriting.
Think the district (top of the page) is Newtownhamilton.

Possible one of the several Tullyvallan but someone fimilar with the area will hopefully know better.

This is a good site to have a look at Reg districts

Thanks for all your help I can see it as Newton Hamilton now that it has been said. should not have presumed the registration district did not cross county lines.

The John & James McGaw you mention Hallmark are probably connected somehow but not directly. My John McGaw by 1901 had taken the name John Chambers and moved to Scotland. his mother Mary never married John Chambers as on her wedding in 1885 to William McClelland it states spinster. On John's second marriage certificate in Scotland he lists his father as John Chambers and mother as Mary McClelland formerly Chambers nee. McGaw so he must have thought his parents where married at the time of his marriage.
