Why birth not ecorded
« on: Thursday 25 May 17 10:57 BST (UK) »
I just cannot find a birth ir baptism record for my GGrandmother. Her and her older brother are not to be found but the other siblings are recorded. Would there be a reason why the 2 older children were not recorded?

Pre-civil registration?
Recorded under another surname?
Not registered where you expect registrations to be?

Detail the marriage, events that are found, and census/other details for those that are errant

Hi, Welcome to Rootschat

Name and year of birth and area would help...

Have you checked the GRO index, what is the mothers maiden name? If other siblings found, should be post reg. Register free to search https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/indexes_search.asp

Sorry to ask so many Q but without info...a non starter  ???

Civil reg only became compulsory from around 1874, after that there was a fine/penalty

Born before the marriage or to a different father ie half siblings/under mothers surname?

Pop the names/places down as you see there are many willing helpers here  :)

You haven't mentioned dates or even a country  :-\ Is it South Africa by any chance?

Civil registration was compulsory from 1 July 1837. Until 1875, the responsibility for registration lay with the registrar, so some births were missed.

With all respect, I do know the date of when civil reg began, was trying to point out when the law enforced or a penalty or fine was issued for non registration. Do not want a debate on legalities, or nit picking.
