The BBC story contains this quote from a lawyer:
Quote
"Ancestry.com takes ownership of your DNA forever; your ownership of your DNA, on the other hand, is limited in years," he said.

However, this appears to be at odds with this statement in AncestryDNA's T&Cs:
Quote
AncestryDNA does not claim any ownership rights in the DNA that is submitted for testing. Any Genetic Information (your DNA data and any information derived from it) belongs to the person who provided the DNA sample, subject only to the rights granted to AncestryDNA in this Agreement.

The BBC story refers to the use of the word "perpetual" in relation to the licence to use the DNA and genetic material. As of yesterday, this has been removed for new customers, and will be removed for existing ones from 24 Jun 2017.

AncestryDNA's full T&Cs are at https://www.ancestry.co.uk/dna/legal/termsAndConditions

If you want them to  attempt to match your DNA to people who have DNA tests subsequent to yours, they will definitely need ongoing retention of the data.
