Hi Jim1, he was married since 1892.
Was it a common mistake to put down a different name.

Mistakes were common particularly if there was a significant influx at the time.

Hi Newbie 2017.

My g.g. grandfather also seems to have the first name of either Peter or Patrick. He was born in Ireland around 1836. On his marriage certificate in 1860 he is a private in the 78th Regiment and his name is Peter. In future census records and on his death certificate his name is Patrick.

Some Irish names are used interchangeably- Patrick/Peter, Edward/Edmund, Agnes/Hannah, Bernard/Bryan, etc.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Well maybe I am not exactly an outsider as all my dad's family except 1 of his grannies came from your beautiful island.  :)

I consider myself Scots/Irish  ;D
