This baptism looks likely, but doesn't explain why his father was recorded as "William" when he married.

Easton in Gordano, 11 November 1849

James George Powell, son of James (labourer) and Sarah, of Pill.

(The couple had another son, Samuel, baptised the same day).

1851 census: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGGK-GL7

Please note that Pill was never in Bristol, but in Somerset ;D
Pill was a chapelry in the parish of Easton-in-Gordano.
And Easton-in-Gordano parish was also referred to as St. George, Somerset

Parish register transcriptions are available on www.portbury-hundred.co.uk.

Possible baptism?
1810, December 2 James son of James and Martha Powell.

1813 Feb 21 William s of James and Martha Powell, Pill labourer.
1816 Jan 28 John s of James and Martha Powell, St George labourer.
1818 Aug 9 Marianne d of James and Martha Powell, St George labourer.
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Burial, Easton in Gordano

30 May 1852: James Powell, 42, of Pill.

This may explain why James George didn't know his father's name - he had died when his son was very young.

Sarah had not remarried by 1871, when she remained in the parish as a widow: RG10/2517/72/28.
