Don't Know Where To Go From Here- Help!
« on: Sunday 04 June 17 08:03 BST (UK) »
Hi There.

I have a convict ancestor from Scotland, his name was George Brand. On many websites he is listed as being born c.1820, but from the resources I have (handed to me from my uncle), it lists his birthdate as 1816. The problem arises in discovering who his parents were. Through my research I have found records of two George Brands, one born in 1816, and one born in 1820. One George (1816) was born in Culross, Perthshire, and the other (1820) in Midlothian.

I have no idea how to find the true parentage of my George, as my uncle does not remember how he came to the conclusion that our George was the 1816 George. Some more information is below:

George Brand
b.1816
mother. Janet Spittal
father. David Brand

George Brand
b. 1820
father. John Brand
mother. Isobella Anderson

Help and advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you,
Emmerson.

Did he marry at all?
The only convict I can find is the one born in Perthshire c1820. He married Isabella Duncan in January 1840.

Pretty sure it is the 1820 George. he is the 1851 Scotland census with his wife Isabella and 4 children.  He was convicted in 1852 and transported in June 1855 on the Stag. His wife joined him around 1858/9 and they had their 5th. child in 1861. In 1867 he bought some land and started farming it, he was an Ag. Lab in Scotland. George died in 1872.

I've just seen your other post from April which says most of what I've just told you. Perhaps you should merge the 2 posts to save further confusion.

What information is contained on the 1875 West Australian death certificate of George BRAND?

Who was the informant?

Thank you all for your replies.

Yes, George did marry Isabella Duncan and have 4 children in Scotland, that I am definitely sure of. He was transported to Australia with a 14 year sentence. His death certificate, as of 1872, has George listed as age 55, which means that his birth date would be c.1817.

The informant was his son, George Brand.

This is definitely a good method to use, but unfortunately, his children have a mixture of the names! For example, his children were George, Isabella, David, Andrew and John.

The prospective parents are:
Isobella and John
David and Janet
