STRABANE WORKHOUSE 1895 - 1911.
« on: Sunday 04 June 17 11:59 BST (UK) »
Hello

Can anyone direct me to where I can find records for people living in the Strabane workhouse between 1895 and 1911? Are they held at Proni and if so, where on the site can they be found. I've had a look today and it's not clear to me.

Also, would people living in the workhouse at that time have been counted on the 1901 census? Again, I've looked under the names I'm interested in but nothing has come up.

I have a possible birth record for one of my ancesters born in Ballyfatten Tyrone in 1895 to a Mary Magee but no father listed. I'm thinking he might have gone to the workhouse as no cenus record for a James Magee in that area has come up that fits. Mary went on to marry a Jonny Devlin in 1897 but James wasn't with her in 1901 or woth any of the extended family. I haven't found a death record either.

Thanks if anyone can help!

People in institutions (workhouses, hospitals, barracks, etc.) should be listed in census under their initials.

Workhouse site gives details of its history, records, etc.

PRONI's e-catalogue- type Strabane Workhouse in search box-

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

If James Magee was your ancestor you presumably have at least a rough idea when he might have died?

Marriage of John Devlin & Mary McGee-

If this is the correct couple in 1901 then have you searched for James in Scotland?

Same family in 1911-

Yes, I know he died in Belfast in 1956 but he wasn't called Magee then. He was informally adopted or rented out it seems between 1895 and 1911 when he turned up in Drumnahoe as James Black boarder which is why it makes it complicated. I have looked at Scotland records and it's complicated by so many variations of the Magee, Mcgee and Mcghee names.

I'm not even sure Mary Magee Devlin is the right mother but the birth record matches his date of birth  and links back to that family via DNA matching has given me a new lead to explore.
