I've never visited the ones you'll be going to but staff at archive offices tend to be very knowledgeable and extremely helpful. Not "highbrow" at all, don't be scared of them. They don't expect all their customers to know exactly what they're looking for and where to find it and are usually more than happy to assist.
Film and fiche readers aren't difficult to use but they all have their idiosyncracies, as jim1 has already said, staff will be able to help you.
All record offices have their own rules but common ones are no eating or drinking in archive areas, mobiles on silent, pencils only, photography only with permission (there may be a charge) and you can't use flash, they will probably have computers but may not allow you to plug in a USB memory stick for downloading things. So check in advance, you may need a passport-size photo for a readers ticket (CARN). There will be lockers for securing your bag etc (because you won't be able to take it in with you), expect a bag search upon entering the building. There may be vending machines for snacks and drinks or you can take your own, there will be a common room type area you can use for eating and drinking. You may be able to take a laptop in with you and there may be power points. There may be wifi. It will probably be air-conditioned so if you feel the cold, take a cardi.
best wishes
Jane :-)
