If you have children for him, subtract 22 yrs from the birth of the 1st born for a guestimate as it's better to have some idea of his birth year than no idea for people helping?  ;)

This would make him 21 yrs old when married, even if it's out a bit it's still something to work from.

Actually, maybe naming the children in order with dates/places where born may possibly help?

The Thomas Dutton I am seeking is listed as a labourer in any thing I have on him, I do know he was living in Skipton or Shipton Street , Ballarat around 1868 - 69. The Heathcote death may not be him.

He is "Thomas Dutton, stoker" on his application for the licence for the Retreat Hotel.

Details given by Thomas himself would be on the this marriage certificate.  Should include his age, occupation, place of birth [below], parents' names including his mother's maiden name.

From the Ballarat Star, Thursday 20th October 1892, page 4.

The Bute Hotel up for auction on this day, owned by Herman Sass, there had been an opinion by the locals that there were too many hotels so I guess Herman took the opportunity to close the Bute Hotel and get compensated for the closure.

The Ballarat Cemetery burial record for Elizabeth on 28 Oct 1897, has occupation wife not widow.

Not having any details other than Thomas was born Manchester, perhaps a further look at these deaths in WA.  Early days of gold mining.

I think the only way forward with your research is to purchase an image of Thomas and Elizabeth's marriage certificate and contact the Ballarat Genealogy Society for information about hotels.  We need a date of birth to help you any further.

Good luck.

Interesting article about the Bute Hotel (supplying liquor on a Sunday) - "the place was in charge of a man named Dutton" while licenced to Elizabeth Smith, 9 may 1884. So Thomas worked there before they were married.
