Ballarat Hotels
« on: Sunday 04 June 17 14:36 BST (UK) »
I am hoping to fill some blanks in my research of a couple of hotels in Peel St North in Ballarat. I have found a relative, Thomas Dutton who applied for the licence of the Retreat Hotel in January 1870 and in December of the same year applied to transfer the licence to a premises across the road, l think he named it the Green Hotel, but not 100% sure. At this time he was married to Mary Ann Dutton, née Williams, married in Tasmania. Mary Ann died in 1882 and Thomas married Elizabeth Smith in 1885, who was licencee of the Bute Hotel, also in Peel Street at the railway end. I can't find any more on the Retreat or Green Hotel or Thomas's movements between 1870 and 1885. I believe the Bute Hotel closed in 1891, I think Thomas died in the Heathcote Hospital in 1893 as I can't find any deaths for a Thomas Dutton in Ballarat. Elizabeth died in 1897, her death is recorded as Dutton, but the funeral notice gives her as her maiden name, Smith, wife of William Smith. If any one can fill some blanks it would be much appreciated
Cheers
Craig

Hi,
Victorian Government Gazette, Friday 1st June 1877, page 1070.

When the DEVIL'S POINT TRIBUTE COMPANY NO LIABILITY was formed as a mining company on 28th May 1877 at Ballarat one of the shareholder holding 100 shares at 2 pound each was a Thomas DUTTON, miner of Ballarat.

Victorian Police Gazette 13th October 1886, page 287.

"James alias Paul McLaughlin, is charged, on warrant, with assaulting Thomas Dutton, in Ballarat East on the 1st instant."

Is this the death of a Thomas Dutton you are referring to in 1893?

Here is a Thomas DUTTON of Costerfield. He is a miner.

Is he the same man you are seeking?

Is he the same man as being of Costerfield in the news item about his death I have posted?

The Thomas Dutton I am seeking is listed as a labourer in any thing I have on him, I do know he was living in Skipton or Shipton Street , Ballarat around 1868 - 69. The Heathcote death may not be him.

It may be an idea to add some extra details if you have them such as birth year, parents names. when/where married, children's names etc. as background info. can be helpful too.

Hi,

I see in a newspaper article 18th November 1868 mention is made of a Thomas Dutton of Chilton, West Bank, Tamar, being insolvent.  Is he your Thomas?

No, it wasn't your Thomas, there was a Captain Thomas Dutton R.N., of West Tamar around at the same time.

Can't help with birth date sorry, obviously I can't use the Heathcote death as a guide, Thomas's only other profession was as a publican, as far as I know, that's why I'm chasing the Hotel line. As I said he was listed as licencee of the Bute Hotel after 1885, I assume until it closed
