A bit confused
« on: Sunday 04 June 17 16:59 BST (UK) »
I have a Ruth Wilson (1805-1851) in my tree. I was filling in her parents who seem to be a Adam Wilson 1771-1855 and Mary Stevenson 1769-1859 from Brampton, Derbyshire. I am trying to find siblings to Ruth and looked on the 1841 and 1851 Census's.
On the 1841 there is an Ellen Wilson daughter 25yrs although mum Mary would be 45 or so when born.
and a Sarah Holmes who is 4yrs.
In 1851 we Have Mary and Husband Adam (79 and 80). Robert Gregory 59 down as Stepson
and Ellen Gregory 39 down as daughter and Sarah Holmes 23 as Step daughter.
Is Ellen married to Robert? Is it supposed to be Son in law? and who is Sarah Holmes?
Thanks Marytm

Be careful! ;D

The 1841 census doesn't mention any relationships, so you can't tell how Ellen is related to Mary?
She could be a niece, or a cousin?! Or even unrelated :-\

Think the Sarah A Holmes mystery is solved.
Appears in 1861 with parents James & Hannah & brother Charles.
Charles' birth has his mother as Wilson.
Sarah was born just prior to Civil Registration.
James Holmes   64
Hannah Holmes   65 b. Barlow Derbys.
Charles Holmes   22
Sarah A Holmes   25 b. Sheffield
On the face of it looks like Hannah Wilson is a sibling of Ruth but not chiselled in stone.

Sarah Ann is not with the family in 1841/1851 & James & Hannah have another son Adam.
James Holmes married Hannah Wilson 3/3/1819 Barlow Derbys.

So from what I can make of it is that Ellen Gregory is Adam's daughter & so is Hannah Holmes making Sarah Ann Holmes Adam's G/daughter.

Robert gregory appears definitely to be son in law, not step son. 1861 in Dronfield Woodhouse

George Godber    24
Susannah Godber    20
John H Godber    2
Robert Gregory    64 - uncle b Dronfield
Ellen Gregory    49 - aunt b Barlow
Mary E Gregory    9 - cousin

RG 9,  2537, 95, 15

Mary Elizabeth Gregory b 1852, Chesterfield. mmn Wilson

Robert Gregory baptised Dronfield 12 Feb 1797. Father James Gregory
