Hello All

I've just received a marriage certificate as follows

15.09.1939  William Edge (26) & Verdun Maud Harding (22) ( 3 Hartland Rd Reading)Bachelor & Spinster. Private Royal Berks Regiment, Alma Barracks Blackdown Surrey.

Fathers; William Edge (Deceased) Clerk  James Harding Cowman

Witness D.G Harris & L.O Markham

Any help with Williams birth, mother and fathers details would be greatly appreciated, I've been searching on Ancestry and freebmd but not having much luck.

Were they buried at Oddington, Gloucestershire?

8 Nov 1956: William Edge, of Woodstock, aged 43
3 Jan 1978: Verdun Maud Edge, died at Churchill Hospital, Oxford, aged 62.  "In the Edge grave (vase)"

So... why Oddington? Could his family have been from there, or do you know of some other connection?

Verdun Harding's family are local to this area, including Witney Oxfordshire.

The witness L.O. Markham looks likely to be Laura Olive Markham mmn Brown, born in the Wantage area in 1911.  She may have been in service with Verdun - have you found her in the 1939 Register just before her marriage?  We can't give information from that, but a free search suggests she and Laura were both in the Henley area.

Only 3 William Edge births on freebmd between June qtr 1912 and Dec qtr 1913.  All others have a middle name. 

Yorkshire mmn Bowden - William Edge married Isabella Bowden 1910 Hull but his occupation does not correspond to 1939 marriage entry but he could have changed jobs

Leek Staffordshire  mmn Edge so illegitimate

Derbyshire  - mmn Bown - freebmd has a marriage in 1896 Derby - William Edge to Elizabeth Bown

This William, born 29 Oct 1913 in Derby, appears to have died in Fremantle, Western Australia in 1972.
