The 1886 marriage certificate will tell you where and when John was born and who his parents were.

This account of a tragic accident at Inglewood would seem to be about your John O'CONNELL.
He and his 15 year old brother in law drowned. 1895

Thanks again sue, sorry I am still trying to work this site out, the extra info on John and William o'connell will help. Thomas James O,Connell was the son of John William O'Connell who drowned.

Thanks for the Personal Message too.
Glad things are beginning to get sorted for your ancestors.
As Dundee has said, the marriage certificate would give you parents names and much, much more

Up to you  ;D

I don't know why you can't find the marriage.  The indexes are free to search online.

https://online.justice.vic.gov.au/bdm/indexsearch.doj

Marriage
1886
#4537

OCONNELL, John
FITZPATRICK, Mary Ellen

When you do your search click on the entry on the results page and then on the next page you have the option to purchase an 'Historical Marriage Image'.  Click on 'Add to cart' and once you pay you will get a link to download the certificate.

Thanks again Debra , will look into this info you gave me. I only joined roots chat 2 days ago so just finding my way, it's a long story of searching on and off for 10 years, I had one abbreviated name to go on no dates and incorrect spelling of parents names, so even though could find records on other web sites, I had to find the evidence to match the people to these records, it hasn't been easy and no family to ask.the article Sparrett posted was tragic but yes they our family members so was very grateful for that info. Happy weekend Andrea.
