Reed [Read] christenings in Jevington 1670-1680
« on: Sunday 11 June 17 00:30 BST (UK) »
Hi

I hope someone can help me with a slight puzzle I have. I am trying to confirm the names of the parents of my ancestor Jane Reed [or Read] who was married to Nicholas Mewett in Lewes on 17 January 1691/2.

The puzzle I have is this - I have two Janes born less than a year apart who could both be my Jane.

Firstly there is Jane Reed - daughter of John [his wife might have been named Emma but this needs checking] - christened 9 July 1673 in Jevington.

Secondly there is Jane Reed - daughter of Nicholas and Ann - christened 5 February 1674/5

John and Nicholas were brothers with Nicholas being born 1629 and John being born in 1633. Their parents were John Reed and Emma [surname unknown].

If anyone can confirm who the parents of Jane Reed were (and also confirm any siblings) it would be a great help.

Many thanks in advance

Matt

Don't know if this will help but there's a tree on FamilySearch, LRZM-T98.
Jane Reed 1676, Jevington, Sussex. Parents Nicholas Reed and Anne Manyard.
Jane married Nicholas Mewett, 17 January 1692 , Lewes, Sussex.

Hiya

Yes that might be useful to look at, however it does still leave me with a puzzle.

I have a Jane Reed born to Nicholas and Ann and christened on 5 February 1674/5 in Jevington. Then there is Jane Reed christened on 9 July 1673 who was the daughter of John and Emma. So far I haven't found  a Jane christened in 1676.

Jane did indeed marry Nicholas Mewett on 17 January 1691/2 in Lewes.

Do you know if the Jevington parish registers are available online anywhere?

Ok time to check out that tree now....

Many thanks.

Matt

You can view sussex baptisms and burials and enquire about marriages if you join the Sussex Family History Group.

Hi there

I have both of these christenings in my records, however my puzzle is working out which Jane is mine lol! So far I haven't found any indication that one died, and I also suspect they were cousins [I believe Nicholas and John were brothers].

If you've got any other suggestions it would be great to know.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi Claire

Thanks for that added info. Is this the same Jane as you mentioned in your previous post? If so then there appears to be an error with dates. You say the christening was on 8 July 1673 and the burial 6 Feb 1673 which would have been 5 months earlier. Should it be 6 Feb 1673/74 instead?

I think this will clear things up if I can "kill off" this Jane. I still think my Jane was the daughter of Nicholas but this would make it certain.

Thanks again

Matt

It would be 1673/74.

Might Jane's father have left a will?  And if so, did he helpfully die after her marriage and name her and her husband?

Hi Matt

The modern day calendar (Gregorian) didn't begin in Gt Britain until 1752,  before this the first day of the year was Ladyday ( 1st March).

So she was baptised 8 July 1673 - the following Feb would still be 1673 using the old style calender - the 1st March a few weeks later would be 1674.

Hope I haven't muddled the waters - here's a link, explain better than I can :)
