Hi, is he the Edward Inman who arrived on the Palmyra in Sep 1838?

The family search record shows his father as Eddy Inman possibly of either Barcombe or Balcombe, Sussex and his wife as Mary native of Smeeth in Kent.  However it gives Mary's mother's name as Ann Clapstone.

Children given as Mary Ann 8, Rachel 4 and Maria 17 months.

The following Inman baptisms are recorded at Hollington, Sussex parents Edward and Mary:

Mary Ann 14 Nov 1830
Thomas 15 Apr 1832 abode St, Mary in the Castle, Hastings mother given as Mary Ann
Rachel 17 Aug 1834                   "                                       "
Eliza 29 May 1836                     "                                        "
Maria 28 May 1837    abode St. Mary Magdalen, St. Leonards    "

in all cases Edward is recorded as a labourer

Yes the suggestion from the baptism entry for Edward in 1802 is that he is illegitimate and his mother was Ellen.  However, on the shipping entry he gives his father as Eddy Inman.  He could have made that up of course to cover up the illegitimacy.

You might need to look for a bastardy bond in the Hastings/Hollington/St. Leonards area.

As for Mary - where did you get the name Wills from?  The situation whereby her mother is recorded as Ann Clapstone could be that Mary was Clapstone and married a Wills before marrying Edward Inman or that her mother could have been Ann Wills when daughter Mary was born but that the mother subsequently married a Mr. Clapstone.

Think you have to investigate all these possibilities.

I am sure other people might see this query and take this up too.

Just to tidy things up there are the following 2 burial records:

Thomas Inman aged 2 buried 13 July 1834
Eliza Inman aged 5 weeks buried 26 June 1836

both buried at St. Leonard's, Hollington and abode recorded as St. Mary in the Castle.

(It's a bit confusing as there is a place St. Leonard's in the same general area as Hollington but there is also a St. Leonard's church in Hollington.)

Hope this info helps,  Pheno
