Thomas Martin 1821 - 1877
« on: Sunday 11 June 17 21:35 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find the wife of Thomas Martin.  They lived around the Magherafelt area.  and had a number of children including Thomas James, Samuel, Sarah, Margaret Ann and Sarah Jane.  Any help would be gratefully received.

Hello Lizzie Collis,

Have you tried to apply for their children's birth certificates? That way you can find out his wife's name.

In turn, you would be able to find Thomas Martin's marriage record.

The civil registration started in 1864 in Ireland and it was very slow on uptake unlike the rest of British Isles.

However, civil registration for marriages are a bit earlier in late 1850s or was it in 1860--only for non-Catholics (it does not mean that Catholics could not register their marriage--but it was encouraged for non-Catholics only).

The only way to find a marriage record pre-1864 or pre-1860 was to know where the parish church is as that is very likely you will find it there.

Good luck,

Tees

Hi,
The free search section of Emerald Ancestors shows the marriage of a Thomas Martin to a Jane Martin (maiden name) in 1848 in the Magherafelt area. However I cannot find any other information.

Regards
Stewart, Irwin, Morrison, Haslett, Murrell - Dungiven area Co. Londonderry
Browne, Barrett -Co.Armagh
Neil, Smyth _Co. Antrim

Just to clarify the above- registration of Catholic marriages began in 1864 & registration of non-Catholic marriages (including Registry Office ones) began in 1845.

LDS have an extracted record of the 1848 marriage- Thomas Martin's father James & Jane Martin's father Felix. Since it's in the civil records before 1864 it was either in a Protestant church or Registry Office.

It may be that all of Thomas Martin's children were born pre-registration of births (1864) so you'll need to search for church records- religion and a more exact location would help.

May have wasted my time with the above searches as you had a previous topic (from March, only a few months ago) looking for daughter Sarah Martin's parents and lots of information was already found  :-\

Sarah Martin's marriage lists her father as JOHN Martin, not Thomas, and residence as Knocknakielt-
