Mary Essex
« on: Sunday 11 June 17 23:47 BST (UK) »
Hi

I wonder if anyone has any info on my ancestor Mary Essex who married William Miller in Stowting on 23 November 1670.

At the moment I have no idea who her father was, although I suspect he might have been called George. The only other Essexes I've found are in Wye where I have found the following christenings:

Richarde Essex - son of George - christened 25 November 1610 Wye
Joane Essex - daughter of George - christened 13 January 1632 Wye

There is also a marriage for George Essex and Elizabeth Bedford (of Canterbury St Mary) in Wye on 25 October 1632.

Apart from these details I've found no sign of Mary or any other reference to the Essex name.

Any ideas and suggestions would be welcomed

Many thanks
Matt

A quote from Cowper's Canterbury Marriage Licences

Miller, William, of Mersham, husb., ba., 25, whose mother consents, and Mary Essex, s. p., v., d. of Hannah, w., who also consents.  At same, Thomas Inment of Cant., tapster bonds.  Nov. 8, 1670.

There is a burial at Mersham,

1674 Dec 21 Ann Essex  Widow

Maybe of some help,
Tony

Hi Tony

This is interesting indeed. According to Familysearch the marriage took place at Stouting (Stowting) on 23 November 1670 which is 15 days after the date given in the Canterbury Marriage Licences. You can see the entry at the following link:

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NN8N-YZZ

The odd thing here is that according to the Marriage Licence entry William and Mary were married at Mersham and not Stowting. Interestingly William's eldest daughter Mary (my ancestor) was born in Mersham in 1673. Their second daughter, Elizabeth, appears to have been born in Hinxhill in 1679. However if Mary died in 1674 then Elizabeth can't be part of my family. Is there any indication of when William died?

The odd thing though is that the Marriage Licence says William was '25' and 'of Mersham' which would make him born c1645, yet the only William I've found a christening for is in Wye in 1635 (born to William and Susan).

I guess the Marriage Licence entry is more likely to be accurate than the entry on Familysearch. What do you think?

I'll have a look into this marriage and see if I can find a christening for William and also one for Mary herself.

Could Hannah be a variation of Ann? Bekesbourne seems a little far away from Mersham though. What do you think?

Many thanks for the info

If he, William Miller were 25 years old he would not need his mothers consent to marry.

Hi Matt,

Although the ML (as transcribed by Cowper) specified Mersham, the marriage according to the PRs did take place at Stowting on 23 November.  It is unusual for the marriage to take place at a venue other than that specified but it does happen.  As far as I am aware a Licence is valid for three months.

There is a baptism for a William Miller in 1645, at Waltham as,

1645 Dec 28 William s/o William & Mary MILLER

Over to you,
Tony

Waltham, Stowting and Mersham are not that far apart.
