Rowland/Bradford in Brighton
« on: Thursday 15 June 17 14:46 BST (UK) »
Hi,
My great grandfather was George Rowland born in Brighton c 1868 to George Rowland and Louisa Nealan nee Godden.
Well we think this is the case. Our problem is that on his marriage certificate he states his father is a deceased fisherman and the G Rowland we have was very much alive and a bricklayer when the wedding took place. So for twelve years We have been trying to find definitive proof of the correct family.
I have tried to further research George's siblings, Mary Louisa (Bradford by marriage), William, Frances, and Albert. The latter three I cannot find.
I suppose I am really stuck. We believe this is the right family and I have also looked for current descendants by putting ads in Brighton papers, but nothing.
Any help however small would be most appreciated. I have Mary Bradfords family on censuses, but nothing on the other siblings.
Thanks

So lets go back a stage, to before the discrepancies occurred.

Who is the child of George (bn 1868) that you are descended from? (A grandparent).

Have you got that person on a census with his/her parents? Have you got his/her birth cert (or gro entry) to confirm mothers maiden name?

Therefore are you 100%sure that the marriage you have for George (in which father is deceased fisherman) is the correct marriage?

Forget George the living bricklayer for a moment, and concentrate on going over what you have leading up to that point. Share the names and dates here, if you wish, so others can look over it too.
Are the siblings you are tracing also children of the bricklayer? So, IF that is the wrong family ('cos your ones father was a deceased fisherman) then surely that wont get anywhere!

That's the one who is a son of George the bricklayer, and Louisa.

I think maybe he goes on to marry Lillie Stephens in 1898. Although father on marriage cert there is a joiner.   Certainly closer to bricklayer than "deceased fisherman" is!

The one born to George and Louisa had middle name Richard

Christening
4 Oct 1868
Brighton
George Richard Rowland
parents George and Louisa

Does that fit in with what you know of "your" George? When/where/who did your George marry?

Hi,
My great grandfather was George Rowland(s), b c 1868, this changes on censuses. He married our great grandma Ellen Pearce in Plymouth in the registry office. On the cert it states his father is a dead fisherman. We know from an old family tree written by a cousin that he had 'family,in Brighton' he has Brighton as his birthplace on censuses.
We adopted the George Richard Rowland b 1868 parents Louisa And George, because our grandma was christened Ellen Louisa Rowland and her brother was Richard George. So basically we matched up names. It was the best fit.
Our gran is his daughter Ellen Louisa Horne nee Rowland. Her Dad was a football coach for Argyle and  Burnley and a coach for Plymouth Albion Rugby.
On his death record his borth year is down as 1868 just thought I would add that

Can you tell us which censuses you have found him on?  I mean found the real George (after his marriage) not the possible George (son of George and Louisa) .
