Mary Goldie - Detectives needed :)
« on: Sunday 18 June 17 16:19 BST (UK) »
First thank you to everyone for all of your help.
MonicaL a special thank you for all your efforts :)

The story so far:

John Mc Fadyen married Mary Goldie aged 20 and 19 of 29 Bolton St Glasgow 1886 Kinning Park
Mary's parents are John Goldie and Agnes Stevenson on marriage cert

Looking for Mary Goldies birth I found a birth in 1866 to a Rachel Goldie (illegitimate) , no mention of Rachels parents on BC
This would correspond with a birth for her 1866 / 1867

Going down the Rachel being her mother route and not the John Goldie and Agnes Stevenson route thinking she had been adopted or boarded out, after checking the Census for 1871, I found living at 62 Main St Gorbals John Goldie and Agnes and Mary. Mary is aged 4.

In the same 1871 Census there is another Mary Goldie aged 6 boarding at 44 King St Eastwood with other boarders and the head being Mr Algier. This Mary I believe is Rachel's daughter. In the same year 1871 we have 2 Mary's but one is 4 and the other is 6.

NOW the interesting thing is on the Census 1871 with John Goldie and Agnes nee Stevenson (born Campsie) and Mary 4 on it, further down the page at the same address 62 Main St are
James Stevenson 45 born Campsie
Mary Stevenson 45 born Campsie
Elizabeth 13 born Stirling
John 8 born Lanark

To me this looks like it could be Agnes Stevenson's parents, all living at the same address and each coming from Campsie.
I have followed this line back through marriages all the way to Campsie

This would make the Rachel route wrong don't you think?

Now the problem I cannot solve is if Mary's mother is not Rachel and it is Agnes and Agnes married John in 1869 and the Census of 1871 gives Mary as 4 years old, either this is an error or Mary was born before they were married.

My problem is I cannot find a Mary Goldie born to John Goldie and Agnes Goldie nee Stevenson for 1866 apart from Rachels Mary ?

Are there any sleuths out there that can solve this mystery for me because I am going crazy  ???

If Mary was born before her parents married then the birth will probably be listed under her mother's surname and her father (who may of may not be John Goldie) may not be listed on the certificate.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

The James Stevenson you mentioned with wife Mary looks a good fit for Agnes' parents (not sure if you have looked at Agnes and John's marriage cert yet to confirm their parents?).

This looks like the Stevenson family in 1861:

James Stevenson 35 Calico Printer b. Campsie
Mary Stevenson 35 b. Campsie
Agnes Stevenson 14 Printfield Worker b. Campsie
Hannah Stevenson 15 Printfield Worker b. Campsie
Elizabeth Stevenson 4 b. Strathblane, Stirlingshire https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQ4C-38T

Address: 232 Main St, Glasgow Calton/Bridgeton

There are a number of other children showing to a James Stevenson and Mary Stewart including a John https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQK7-6QT Think they might have lost them as babies or certainly very young as they don't show in the 1871 census as you have.

The John Stevenson, son to James Stevenson and Mary Stewart https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQK7-6QT, shows with Agnes and family in 1881:

John Goldie 32 collier b. Glasgow
Agnes Goldie 32 b. Campsie
Mary Goldie 14
John Goldie 9
Catherine Goldie 7
Hannah Goldie 3
Agnes Goldie 10 Months
John Stevenson 18 brother in law, Quay Labourer b. Glasgow
James Allan 25 lodger collier

Address: 29 Bolton Street, Glasgow/Kinning Park (this is the address on Mary's marriage cert isn't it?).

MonicalL

YES!!  ;D
I think you might have found Mary. This looks it could be her  :)
Her marriage cert gives Canal St as her and John Goldies address and on Mary's Birth Cert it gives her address as Canal St .

I will have to put the upper part into the deciphering board.... :)

Thank you so much :)

Thank again for your help.
