1911 UK Census - Samuel Mullins - Shoreditch
« on: Monday 19 June 17 13:03 BST (UK) »
Samuel Mullins is my maternal Grandfather.  The earliest record I have found for him is the 1911 Census, where he is shown with his family - wife/partner Eliza (her family name was "Bryan") Called  her "Lizzie" in this census, and his children John, Sam, Margaret and Rose (my Mother).  The only other record I have for him is his death Certificate - 28 October 1928, Shoreditch.   Does anyone have him in their family tree?  Many thanks :)

Hello and welcome to Rootschat. There looks like another child for this family. William James Mullins birth reg Q4 1898 St George hanover Square district. Mother's mn Bryan. Same district as so John in Q4 1900. He was registered as John James Mullins - perhaps James is the name of either Samuel or Eliza's father. There is a marriage of a Samuel Mullis in Q3 1897 in St Saviour district. One possible bride is Eliza Sare. If Eliza was a widow she would have married in first married name, but her maiden name would  be on birth reg of her children

My theory about Samuel mullis was wrong - just found parish record. Eliza Sare was a spinster age 30, Samuel Mullis was a widower, 48 and a marble mason

Looks like there's another Mullins / Bryan couple, I've found two more children (girls) 1902 and 1904, who can't belong to your family.
Was Maggie / Margaret's birth registered Islington district?

I've tracked down the other couple, William Mullins an wife Annie nee Bryan. In 1901 the have children William J (so he's not yours) and Alice Sophia. I'm wondering if the John James might be there's too, given the birth registration district.

Have you found your John's birth registration?

Possible Census returns for the Samuel you are looking for. On the 1881 Census there is a Samuel MALINS born 1860 Shoreditch living with his father William born 1818 Clerkenwell at 15 Daintry Street, Hackney both are Cabinet Makers. On the 1891 Census they are still together at 78 Chapman Street, Hackney but the surname has been transcribed MALLEN this time. I think the problem you are having may be down to the transcription and spelling of Mullen.

Am I the only one having problems with this one - only births of children I can find don't tie in with ages on census, can't find dau. Rose's birth at all (trees state she was Rose Louise) - nor can I find a marriage for parents, let alone find them 1901 or before.

According to electoral rolls 'Lizzie' (from 1911 census) was Elizabeth, not Eliza.

Totally bewildered!
