Ancestry, Find My Past or A N Other
« on: Tuesday 20 June 17 12:49 BST (UK) »
Hi All

I'm returning to my Family Tree research after a bit of a gap when I reached a road block and couldn't get past it. I never really gave up but did let my subscription to Ancestry lapse.

However, I have acquired some new information that may help me past my impasse and have decided to take out a new subscription.

Originally I had Ancestry because it supported a Family Tree Maker that gave hints and was an easy method of documentation. But as they no longer support that, I was wondering if my money was best spent elsewhere.

I suppose my Family Tree is quite normal except that there is a link to the Isle of Man which needs some answers.

Thanks in advance, for helpful advice.

Of the subscription sites I suggest Find My Past is at present the best.

For Manx research, try FamilySearch, or www.iMuseum.im ;D

Or ask on RootsChat!
I live just 5 or 10 mins walk from the Manx Museum, and it's library ;)

So much has been added to all the sites, I suggest you look at each one to see what they now cover, then  subscribe  to the one that the most suits your requirements.

It may also be worth finding out if you can access any of the sites through your local library, that may also influence your decision as to which site to choose.

I rather like "Ancestry" myself, no fussing about with credits, just a flat fee. I'm told that apart from that, "Scotland's People"can be very good, but I've not a lot north of the border.
Threlfall (Southport), Isherwood (lancs & Canada), Newbould + Topliss(Derby), Keating & Cummins (Ireland + lancs), Fisher, Strong& Casson (all Cumberland) & Downie & Bowie, Linlithgow area Scotland . Also interested in Leigh& Burrows,(Lancashire) Griffiths (Shropshire & lancs), Leaver (Lancs/Yorks) & Anderson(Cumberland and very elusive)

Yes it's a super site if researching Scottish Records as it's the only place to access such.

They don't cover anywhere else.

Yes, that's what I meant. Sorry I didn't make it clear, it's just that it's so much better than other ones, on Scottish families.

Has anyone purchased Family Tree Maker 2017? Is it helpful, does it link into Ancestry, or findmypast in a similar way to the old version? I have noticed that they delayed their release of a Mac version, but haven't seen that they have resolved whatever issue there was, important because I would be running it on a MacBook Pro.

I bought a paid upgrade to FTM so that I could have a free upgrade to the 2017 edition when it has been launched fully  and I don't yet have it. More about this here :
