Knutsford Cheshire 1700s
« on: Sunday 25 June 17 11:37 BST (UK) »
I'm in a bit of a quandary. I've found my fourth great grandmother. She was baptised in Knutsford in 1764 along and there were some siblings baptised within a few years of her. My problem is that their father is described as William Coppock of Ludlow. Does anyone know of a place around Knutsford called Ludlow, or do I assume that he must have come from Shropshire? Thanks for any assistance

Did Mary have twin sisters called Ann and Jane baptised in 1760?  Father William is also stated as being of Ludlow, a husbandman.

I cannot at the moment find any baptism for a William Coppock in Ludlow.  I can find a likely Knutsford one and even two possible marriages in the Knutsford area.  Nothing for Ludlow at all.

The distance between Knutsford and Ludlow is 92 miles, so not exactly round the corner!

Could the minister have misheard what William said and interpreted it as Ludlow?  Difficult to know what to think here.

According to Genuki Knutsford is a Parish in the Hundred of Bucklow.

Bucklow/Ludlow - could this be causing the confusion. Can't find a village called Bucklow though.

If you look on the Cheshire Parish Register Database

http://cprdb.csc.liv.ac.uk/

you will find Mary's baptism. The residence is given as SUDL which, according to the Glossary, is Sudlow.

There is a registration district of Bucklow which has Knutsford as one of the places in this district.

There is a baptism for a William Coppock on 6 January 1736 parents Aaron and Hannah at Wilmslow.

Wilmslow is also one of the places in the registration district of Bucklow.

The distance between Wilmslow and Knutsford is just under 8 miles.  So a possibility.

The capital letter L and S are often confused. Auldfarrt, can you provide us with an image (or link to the image) of the document which says that William is "of Ludlow"?

A quick google search tells me that Sudlow is in Knutsford. :)
