Looking for Elizabeth Rose nee Buss in the 1871 census
« on: Monday 26 June 17 09:27 BST (UK) »
Elizabeth Buss dau of Benjamin Buss Solicitor and Eliza Newington was b abt 1835 in Mayfield.  No baptism has been located to date.

The couple had at least 11 children and Elizabeth was a middle child.  A number of Elizabeths siblings were only baptised a week or two before they died. One child was 5 when she was baptised and she died a week later.

Elizabeth aged about 20 when she married Edgar Rose a Butcher in 1856 when she was about 4 months pregnant.  The couple had 3 children:
John Edgar Rose - 1856 Mayfield
Clare Elizabeth - 1858 Mayfield
Emily Eliza - 1862 Mayfield.

I located Edgar and Elizabeth in the 1861 census at High St Mayfield [ Registration district: Uckfield; Enumeration district: 18; Archive reference: RG09; Piece number: 574; Folio: 189; Page number: 18].

I am unable to locate neither Elizabeth nor Edgar after that census.

There was an Edgar Rose boarding in the 1871 census at St Mary Magdalene Hastings however this Edgar said he was only 33.  He was a butcher as was Elizabeth's husband.  There are a number of admissions into Fulham Road Workhouse for an Edgar Rose also a butcher but listed as 54.  Perhaps a transcriptions issue?

This Edgar Rose also does a 12 month imprisonment for larceny and receiving.

But Elizabeth I can find nothing.  Her 3 children pop up in later life but the illusive 1871 and 1881 census proves challenging.

A burial for an Elizabeth Rose of the correct age occurs in Mayfield 9 Aug 1886.  Was this 'my' Elizabeth but if she where is she in the 1871 and 1881 census records?

Yes a challenge and assistance is appreciated.

There's a birth of a Philadelphia Rose mmn Buss reg in Hailsham district Q2 1856, the quarter before John Edgar in Uckfield district, so there must be two Rose / Buss couples

She's a daughter of a John Rose & Elizabeth (marr as Elizabeth Ann Buss at Heathfield 1835, the family still settled in Heathfield in 1841-1891 censuses).

Elizabeth is "46" in 1861 & still in Heathfield in 1871 aged "55" so it looks unlikely this is the Rose/Buss couple which had William in London in 1864.
