William Henry WALKER Marriage to Hannah WRIGHT
« on: Monday 26 June 17 10:17 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have a bit of a problem (Don't we all!!) I have a William Henry WALKER who was born circa 1852 at Halifax. His parents were Thomas Beresford WALKER and Charlotte BUERGIN. In looking for his marriage I came across 1). William Henry WALKER married to Hannah WRIGHT 2nd Quarter 1872 at Halifax and 2). William WALKER married to Hannah WRIGHT 4th Quarter 1867 at Guisborough.

I found on the 1911 Census a William Henry WALKER married to Hannah and they were married for 38 years, which points to the 1872 marriage at Halifax. But there is still doubt as to which marriage is correct.

It seems too much a coincidence that two William WALKER's married to a girl with exactly the same name. But there again in family history there are so many anomalies and coincidences and strange goings on!!

Can anyone make sense of it? I would be very grateful for any help and suggestions.

Regards,

Margaret

An online tree gives William Walker marrying Elizabeth Simpson in DecQ 1867 at Guisborough.

The Parish register for the 1872 marriage is online;  giving his father as Thomas, an overlooker and Hannah's father as Isaac, also an overlooker.  William's occupation is shown as mechanic.

The FreeBMD entry for Guisborough marriages DecQ 1867 shows brides as Elizabeth Simpson and Hannah Wright; grooms as William Walker (no Henry) and Christopher Pollard.

Before going on to the marriage it would be wise to be clearer about William's birth.

William Henry Walker born 24 June 1851 was baptised at St John the Baptist, Halifax, 31 Aug 1851; parents Thomas (overlooker) and Charlotte, of Skircoat.

His birth was registered at Halifax, Sep qtr 1851, mother's maiden name VINT.

(Thomas Walker married Charlotte Vint at Halifax, Dec qtr 1841).

What is your source for the Thomas Beresford Walker/Charlotte Buergin family - can you point us to them?

Thanks Nanny Jan,

It looks as if the 1872 marriage is the likely one as 1871 census states William Henry was a mechanic with father Thomas.
1901 Census states William H was an engine maker & turner.

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction...four eyes are always better than two!!

By the way on the 1871 census it says William Henry's place of birth was Rercoat, or Rescoat. Is there a place of that name?

Regards,

Margaret

Rercoat will be a misrendering of Skircoat - see the baptism I mentioned.

Avm228,

Thank you - it looks as if I had the wrong info from a cousin - he gave me BUERGIN as the maiden name. I will have to recheck my info again.

Learnt a lesson again!! Never trust info without double checking.

Regards,

Margaret
