Finding a marriage bond/license?
« on: Tuesday 27 June 17 15:23 BST (UK) »
Familysearch host this lovely resource:

Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
  •     Archdeaconry of Norfolk. Court
  •      Archdeaconry of Norwich. Court
  •     Dean and Chapter of Norwich
  •      Diocese of Norwich. Consistory Court

I have a wedding celebrated in Saint Mary's, Banham:
12 Oct 1758 between John Reeve of Kenninghall and Mary Phillips OTP, marr. by license.

I suspect Mary Phillips may well be the one mentioned in Edward Phillips Will of 1758.

So I'd very much like to see who's names are on that license.

I know these licenses aren't indexed - but can anyone tell me which of the four Jurisdictions I should be patiently paging though?

Found it;

For other people:

Go to the familysearch maps page:

http://maps.familysearch.org/

Type your Parish and hit search:

Click the link, and you're given a zoomed in map, and a dialog.

Click the jurisdiction tab of the dialog!

Oh. That's disappointing. Having found I needed  "Court of the Archdeaconry of Norfolk" for Banham, I went to that section.

I'm looking for 1758, and there's a nice 1757-1759 entry.

And there a front-of-book index! Page to 'R':

No Reeve !?

Is it "normal" for a bond to be missing, or have I made an obvious mis-step?

OK. I have now paged through the entire 447 images of Archdeaconry of Norfolk Court, 1757-1759.

Old School genealogy is slow.  :(

Anyway, I can confirm that whoever made the index in the front of that register was right - there is no Reeve bond in there.

Is the license referred to in the parish register likely to be somewhere else? Have I looked it up wrong? Or has it  just succumbed to the passage of years, in some unfortunate way?

Hi BugBear

Banham being in the Diocese of Norwich (as per Jurisdiction Tab) some of the Bonds look like they are filed there.

Diocese of Norwich. Consistory Court
1756-1758:- 403 images
1758:- 190 images
1758-1759:- 540 images

So there are a potential 1133 images to check. ;)

yokel

Short term; thank you very much!
Longer Term; you have just proved that I don't know how to find these on my own. I need to learn.

Dear "The Yokel"; can you advise further on how to locate which court's documents to look in?

In one of your earlier guidance posts you said:

I start by finding the Probate Court of where the marriage took place using http://maps.familysearch.org/

And yet on this occasion the bond was filed under the court associated with the Diocese.

Can you explain how you knew, and how I might know in future?
