Brewster
« on: Wednesday 28 June 17 06:25 BST (UK) »
My ancestor Henry Brewster was a blacksmith living in Cavendish. His father was William born in Pentlow and I believe his father to have been Abraham Brewster who died in 1811.
Can anyone verify this information and perhaps add anything to it.
Also, does anyone have a photo of Henry the blacksmith. he was the blacksmith for much of the late 1800's
Any help much appreciated.

Hello Fuzzyken and welcome to rootschat!

You've posted in the "How to use Rootschat" board, I'll ask a moderator to move your request to the Suffolk board.  ;)

I'm assuming your Henry BREWSTER was born around 1833 and appears in the 1861, 1871, 1881 and 1891 census with wife Elizabeth and children? Do you have these census details already - they are available free on familysearch.org.

I'm guessing this is Henry in the 1841 at Frog's Hall, Cavendish?

Hi Maddy
Thanks for the quick response
The people on the census are my family and I wonder whether my conclusions as to Henry's father being William and his father being Abraham are correct.
Henry married Elizabeth Feltwell in 1854 and they had many children amongst which was Eleanor born in 1873 who (out of wedlock) gave birth to my grandfather Jabez Ernest Brewster in 1896.
In addition to going back through my family line I would dearly like to know what became of Eleanor.
Regards
Fuzzyken

If the 1841 census is the correct family, then William probably married Sarah SMITH on 5 Nov 1817 at Cavendish. Baptisms that I can see to this couple are:

Ann Elizabeth (bap 1 Sep 1818, born 25 Aug 1818)
George            (bap 21 Aug 1819, born 19 Aug 1819)
Susannah        (bap 8 July 1823, born 28 Jun 1823)
William           (bap 6 May 1826, born 21 Apr 1826)
John              (bap 12 June 1829, born 2 Nov 1828)
George           (bap 30 June 1831, born 21 Jun 1831)
Charlotte        (bap 5 July 1835, born 22 Feb 1835)

all baptised at Cavendish.

Strangely I can't see a baptism for Henry around 1833, unless he is the second George?

I'm not sure about William's father, the only baptism I can see that looks right is William BREWSTER bap 30 May 1790 at Glemsford to parents John BREWSTER and Alice. Will look further.

ah, I've found the baptism you probably think is correct:
William BREWSTER bap 1 Dec 1793 (born 18 Nov 1793) at St George, Pentlow to Abraham BREWSTER and Elizabeth.

Added: Is this William's death - registered at Sudbury in Dec qtr 1857 aged 64? Looking more like the one born in 1793 to Abraham and Elizabeth. I should have checked the 1851 census more carefully - I think he's definitely sounding more likely. ;)

An interesting newspaper article mentioning Henry and Elizabeth BREWSTER in Bury and Norwich Post, Tuesday, January 14, 1879:

"Julia Brewster, single woman of Glemsford, was summoned for assaulting Charlotte, wife of Henry Mills on Dec 29th. A cross summons had also been taken out and Charlotte Mills was also summoned for using threats towards Elizabeth, wife of Henry Brewster, blacksmith on the same day. After a lengthy hearing during which it appeared that mutual jealousy was the cause of the disputes, the Bench dismissed all the cases, and ordered each party to pay her own costs."

That's interesting Dyingout. I saw an entry for Jabez Ernest BREWSTER (35), Lucy (32) and Jack (11) on the American Trader to New York in Sep 1930.
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-G5H9-HG1?i=358&cc=1923888

Added:
Ernest BREWSTER married Lucy QUINLAN Dec qtr 1918 West Ham and had Ernest J BREWSTER (mmn Quinlan) registered at West Ham Jun 1919.

Originally I discounted the idea as there is a death in Romford in 1963 of Jabez Erenst BREWSTER aged 67, so I assumed he (at least) stayed in the UK.

Fuzzyken - have you found Jabez or Eleanor on the 1939 register at all?
