Inscription in England's highest cemetery
« on: Thursday 29 June 17 11:09 BST (UK) »
I was intrigued by the first line of the inscription on this gravestone when I recently visited Nenthead Cemetery near Alston Cumbria. The church of St John, Nenthead claims to be the highest parish church in England and by allusion I have assumed the cemetery to be the highest in England

They are Elder Futhark runes:

but as to what is intended by them, I  can't say.

That reminds me a little of the phrase sometimes used in that context:-

"Et in Arcadia Ego"

It would be a bit more convincing if it was "etiago"!

Perhaps it's the ancient equivalent of our modern day typo!

If my translation is correct this would be "I too lived in Arcadia." Seems a perfectly fitting epitaph. Many thanks to all who have contributed.
