Help identifying a US military uniform
« on: Friday 30 June 17 14:35 BST (UK) »
Can anyone identify this US military uniform? This relative lived from 1824-1886. H was a bit old for the Civil War. But I really do not know.

He was born in Tennessee but moved in 1830 to Illinois. Thanks for any help you can give.

This may be nothing to do with the "uniform", but there is a civil war draft registration record for a David Hollis, farmer, of Spring Creek, Illinois, born Tennessee around 1824.

found this while searching
I think its the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH), an Irish Catholic fraternal organization founded in the United States in the 1830s

Interesting about the AOH. I will have to chase that lead down. Also the Civil War info found on David Hollis is helpful as well. We didn't think anyone in the family had been in the Civil War but I'll check into that more. Thanks!!!

I don't think he served in the civil war. He's listed as a member of the Pike County Board of Supervisors throughout the war years.

I think Elinga is on the right track. It's not a military uniform, just regalia of hat, sash, belt, sword and gloves. The prominent crosses on the gloves and the hat suggest a Christian faith based society.

Gravestone appears to indicate that he was a Freemason and, possibly, a member of the Odd Fellows, if the pic in the link above is his gravestone.
