Ann Brown (e) born c1803 Shipley
« on: Friday 30 June 17 20:09 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find out who Ann's parents were.  In 1824 she married Charles Flint in Henfield, at this time she was a widow by the name of Ann Nicholls, so far I have been unable to find either her birth or her first marriage.

The 1851 and 1861 census both show her place of birth as Shipley and I have found a Brown family in Shipley but have so far failed to find any trace of Ann.

Any help would be gratefully received, she has been a brick wall for a very long time!

Thank you.

Born 1803 but a widow by 1824 when she re-married so very young.  Does the 1824 marriage entry show her as previously Brown?

Son Henry's 1840 birth shows mmn as Nichols but Susan b 1838 shows Brown (Susanna in 1851)

Thank you for that, certainly looks like her first marriage, and could well be her baptism, wouldn't be the first time a woman has lied about her age!

Alan Brown and Susanna Algate had already 'appeared' on the radar as possible parents but had not found the baptism only their marriage.

Hmm - per another researcher

'Allen Brown was born in about 1760 probably in Ditchling, Sussex. (Note there is no evidence showing he is the son of John except for naming his first child John). He married Susanna. Susanna died on 28th June 1830 probably in Shipley, Sussex (shown in Horsham General Baptist Chapel records - age 73, wife of Allen ) and was possibly buried in Horsham General Baptist churchyard. It is assumed that Allen moved back to Ditchling after 1790 ( see Personal History below). Allen & Susanna had five children.
John Brown was born on 26th July 1784 in Shipley, Sussex (shown in Horsham General Baptist Chapel records) and died on 16th April 1785 (shown in Horsham General Baptist Chapel records - age 9 months, son of Allen & Susanna of Shipley) and was possibly buried in Horsham General Baptist churchyard.
Allen Brown was born on 11th March 1786 in Shipley, Sussex (shown in Horsham General Baptist Chapel records). He married Philadelphia. Philadelphia died on 20th August 1854 and Allen died on 3rd October 1861. They were buried in the Brown family Baptist graveyard, Ditchling, Sussex (inscription shows 'To the beloved memory of PHILADELPHIA wife of Allen BROWNE who died August 20th 1854 Aged 60 years Also of the above named ALLEN BROWNE died October 3rd 1861 Aged 75 years') In 1823 Allen Browne was a shopkeeper of Lindfield (see archive 3),
Sarah Brown was born on 29th March 1787 in Shipley, Sussex (shown in Horsham General Baptist Chapel records).
Anne Brown was born on 29th March 1787 in Shipley, Sussex (shown in Horsham General Baptist Chapel records) and died in July 1787 (shown in Horsham General Baptist Chapel records - infant, dau of Allen & Susanna of Shipley) and was possibly buried in Horsham General Baptist churchyard.
Peter Brown was born on 30th September 1790 in Shipley, Sussex (shown in Horsham General Baptist Chapel records). '
