Gosh, thank you! I notice a discrepancy with Sarah's age between the two census. Is there any way I can check? Great info anyway. Thanks so much!

the 1841 census rounded adult ages up/down to the nearest 5 so age will not be exact

1861: Dean Path, Edinburgh

Cochane Weir   66
Sarah Weir   66
Sarah Weir   13
Sarah Weir   4

Her death of 1870 shows she was 74yrs at ime of death so her age is fluctuating with every record
Scottish deaths are indexed under both married and maiden names
WEIR
SARAH
74
1870
685/1 600 **
St George

KERR
SARAH
74
1870
685/1 600 **
St George

Hayjood, if you get those death certificates for Cochrane Weir and Sarah Kerr they should tell you the names of their parents, including their mothers' maiden surnames, and assuming of course that whoever registered the deaths knew that information. Go to www.scotlandpeople.gov.uk for this. It will cost you about the same as a cup of coffee to view each document.

I don't like the way that tree is set out with all the sons together and then all the daughters afterwards. It means that you don't know their order of birth, and therefore you can't make an informed guess about the names of their parents.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
