Marriages/Baptisms with known parents
« on: Tuesday 04 July 17 19:52 BST (UK) »
Whenever I ask about a ancestor that I cannot find, invariably the answer is found via the father/mother information being accessed by the helper.

Where is this information found please?

If it's out there for me to find, it will save me the uneasiness of frequent "asks"!!!

Give an example post.
Different eras will have different resources available.
All census look up transcriptions are Crown Copyright http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

FreeBMD.org.uk shows mother's maiden name for all births from July qtr 1911.

As it suggests - it's free!

The new GRO Index Search shows mmn for (nearly) all births from 1837 to 1915.
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/indexes_search.asp

You have to register; but it's free to use.

Ah. I have a feeling that the GRO site is the one I will be needing.

Thank you for this.

Phil :)

I use both!

Start with one of the children - an unusual name is best.
Locate a birth, if possible, using FreeBMD

Then find the same birth on GRO.
The GRO site only allows a year +/- 2 years

Thank you. Really appreciate this.

Might not stop me posting but at least I can delve a little more.

I see a lot of your research has been on Lancashire ancestors. My first ports of call are Lancashire Online Parish Clerks and Lancashire BMD. Date ranges are up to 20 years on LANOPC and as wide as you like after 1837 on Lancs BMD. Some births on Lancs BMD entries have mother's maiden names in the index. A few have names of fathers of illegitimate children indexed. Search options on LANOPC are many. One can focus on an individual church or widen it to a whole parish, town or city or county. Selecting an individual church and using the distance option is useful to search a wider area. When I've found the baptism of one child I search for possible siblings by entering parent's names and the maximum 20 year range. Then I do another search a few years either side of that range. If I suspect a child was illegitimate or had a change of surname I've tried searching by Christian names of child and mother (needle in haystack if they were John and Mary). It even enables searches for godparents at R.C. baptisms and witnesses at weddings.

Yes. I am concentrating on the Barrow family. My paternal line.

The intriguing part is when they emigrate.
